Tech Events in Vancouver: Sep. 1 - 7

With the long weekend behind us, the kids back in school and a busy month ahead, here are some of the events around Vancouver (and why not, Victoria too) at the top of September.

Radaint Rolls up the Rim and Wins

Vancouver's Radiant Communications announced a 'significant win' yesterday - it has been awarded a 5 year contract for broadband services for over 3,000 North American locations of a large North American corporation. The total value of services and equipment over the 5 years is in excess of $20 million.

Edmonton's newest data centre

The latest buzzword in the world of technology is "cloud computing", otherwise known as utility or sometimes on-demand computing. All the tech giants are getting into the game, and analysts are making bold predictions about the nascent industry. According to a recent BusinessWeek article, cloud computing represents "a sea change in the way computing is done in corporations" and Merrill Lynch estimates that the annual market for cloud computing will surge to $95 billion within the next five years.

Tabrio Mobile Web Brings Cheap Long Distance, French Maids to Mobiles

Vancouver's Verb Exchange announced today the launch of Tabrio Mobile Web Beta, a service for making calls or sending text messages at cheap rates. How cheap? Internet cheap! That is to say, $0.02 a minute or $0.02 cents per text; not bad, but comparable to similar services. Tabrio enters a very competitive market. The biggest player, Skype, offers a similar $0.02 per minute rate.

ComScore's Top Startups in Canada - September 2008

As a follow-up to our September Canada Start-Up Index yesterday, we've arranged with comScore to get some real data behind what our numbers mean. While we agree that Alexa and Compete (and our Techvibes Traffic Rank) numbers are not an accurate measurement of website traffic, they are a great way to compare the traffic of multiple online properties as it creates a level playing field for metrics.

Google Chrome Kicks Browser Wars 2.0 Up a Notch

There are some rumours that just won't die: Google putting out a browser, Apple producing a tablet computer, Microsoft making a quality OS. Every time I see these, I skip past the headline without a second thought. We can scratch that first one as of yesterday, when Google dropped the bomb that they will be releasing a browser, Google Chrome. Interestingly, they did this in the form of a comic by noted cartoonist Scott McCloud.

Top 10 Blog Posts of August 2008

August 2008 was a busy month on Techvibes - both behind the scenes with the launch of our new site and on the blog with heavy traffic for a summer month.

News of our launch was well-received and the accompanying blog post proved that. Rogers was back in our Top 10 again and this time around it had nothing to do with the iPhone but rather their new Talkspot product. Amazon.com had a busy month with two acquisitions in the Pacific Northwest - Victoria's Abebooks followed by Seattle's Shelfari.

Goodbye Telefilm New Media Fund

Turns out Techvibes was on to something BIG one week ago when we asked What's happening at Telefilm? According to the Globe and Mail, the Conservative government axed the $14.5 Million a year Canada New Media Fund (CNMF) on Friday before the long weekend (very sneaky). The CNMF was designed to create and distribute Canadian interactive new media both domestically and internationally.

Changes to the Techvibes Startup Indexes

September's startup indexes have been published and you'll notice a couple changes in the format.

Rather than displaying multiple columns with Alexa.com, Compete.com, and average rankings, we've simplified the layout with just the Techvibes Traffic Rank (TTR) displayed. The TTR is currently an average of Alexa and Compete's data however we will include other valubale data into the calculation in the future.
