Bridging Web 2.0 Tools with Ad Hoc Mobile Usage

On May 20th, we did our first public demo of some of the tools we've put together here. We talked a bit about the components we were building, how we are implementing them in Drupal and what this means for re-use, and talked through a scenario of using the SMS gateway and a live updating web page to stimulate local interaction.

Attached is the simple presentation that accompanied the talk and demo. Note that we were using the internal codename 'SMAUG' at the time, and settled on SIFT as the name of the component within the MUSE context.

The take away is that we can introduce tools to the mass market by promoting simple interaction: throw up a web page on a projector, highlight a phone number to text messages to, and you've got an instant back channel and interaction that anyone can participate in. This style of "no account" interaction can be coupled with an invitation to activate an account at a later time, by sending back an SMS message with a URL and details. As well, existing "power users" can use Twitter and other such tools, whose output is aggregated and interleaved with the ad hoc interaction happening on site.
